We want to provide options for people to genuinely and authentically reflect their relationships on Facebook.

—Andrew Noyes, Facebook’s manager of public policy communications on the recent update to include options of Civil Unions, Domestic Partnerships for Relationship Status!!!!

More info: Facebook has added two options to its list of relationship statuses for users: “In a civil union” and “In a domestic partnership.” The options were introduced last week in the United States, as well as Canada, France, the U.K. and Australia. Facebook reports that this has been a highly requested feature from users, and the network wants to “provide options for people to genuinely and authentically reflect their relationships on Facebook.” Before the addition, options included single, in a relationship, married, engaged, it’s complicated, in an open relationship, widowed, separated and divorced. The new changes were made in consultation with Facebook’s Network of Support, a group that includes lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender organizations.

WAY COOL!!! :)

Today I had the privilege of meeting Ross Dawson, prominent futurist, and listening to his thoughts on …. well, the future! Can’t say enough about how rad the whole conference was. First, that my agency threw an event for the discussion of the Future of Media in the first place— but further, the stuff Ross and others from Ketchum offices and affiliates worldwide were saying was really fascinating and clarified my intuition that the future of media is       (A) digital (B) local (C) complex.
Here are selective notes of points I found interesting. (originally captured as tweets):
Dawson predicts US newspapers will be dead in 2017, in Germany by 2030.
“Facial recognition automating foursquare check-in may be the future?” - Ross Dawson / how would you feel? — my followers all got angsty at this
“Design is more importantt today than ever before. Users expect beautiful interfaces.” -Ross Dawson / finally!
Biggest mistake made by multi-national brands in BRIC is pushing news that is not locally relevant enough. This is huge.
In Brazil, media will not mention brand names - unless it is bad news/ unless they are paid
Brazil: 70 of 190 mil ppl are online. > Orkut is top social media site, Facebook & Twitter are tied for 2nd
“35% of China has internet access(mostly broadband). Smartphones /mobile also growing”
Fastest growing sector of PR in Russia from ‘09-10 was digital, followed by crisis communications
Back to the graphic above, I’d sooo want to slap the NET (interesting coincidence re: acronym — or is it?!) in certain locations @ Conde Nast & various newspapers.
This is tremendously controversial topic is all over the place — so here few links of places Dawson’s timeline is being discussed, in case you want to learn more:
USA to Lead the Extinction of Newspapers in 2017 Followed by UK and Rest of the World, Says Leading Media Futurist Ross Dawson (marketwire.com)
Futurist Ross Dawson: Newspapers dead in the U.S. by 2017 (shortformblog.com)
Futurist predicts newspaper extinction dates (newstatesman.com)
British newspapers to die in 2019 (guardian.co.uk)
Wilkinson: accept that newspapers are dying, now do something positive (guardian.co.uk)
The Gutenberg Parenthesis and the Extinction of Newspapers (mountainrunner.us)
A left-field objection to the death of newsprint (guardian.co.uk)
Could the timeline be a wake up call that publishing seems to be denying? I doubt it. For me, the confusing part is around people’s willingness to pay for something that is tangible. I just don’t see them being willing for much longer, with such beautiful and dynamic tablets as the iPad and Galaxy changing visual standards for what information should look and feel like.
So what’s your take on the future of media? Do you think newspapers will go extinct?
