American as Apple π: Defragging the First 35 Years of Personal Computing

On this, the occasion of the 35th birthday of personal computing — or rather — the 35th anniversary of the birth of the Apple I computer, I bugged my friend Craig of @S33Light to recount some of his personal computing history for my hinternetz. I often enjoy these anecdotes from him, but I thought others could too & his story is as American as (techy) Apple Pie.

Below, I’ve edited his piece freely, bolding my favorite parts, placing some content into footnotes & adding pics and my commentary as I pleased. Hope you enjoy! //

I had been exposed to computers before anyone else I knew. The first time was in the mid 70s when my friend’s dad had brought home a briefcase with an acoustic coupler modem and a printer in it. He showed us how to put the phone receiver in the rubber cradle and dial the 800 number for it to connect. You knew it was connected when the printer began spewing type out on a roll of paper. I grew up with an electric typewriter in the house so the keyboard was familiar, but it was interesting to me that this one provided only plastic to tap rather than a small steel hammer snapping down with a life of it’s own. I don’t remember a screen, but I remember playing ELIZA and Lunar Lander on it for several hours on a couple of occasions.

In 1977, I had never heard of ‘Silicon Valley’ or Apple computers. I recall watching the premiere of Star Wars at Grauman’s Chinese Theater in Hollywood [1] that summer.Had I known that somewhere in Northern California, the real science fiction future had been born in the form of 200 brand new Apple 1 computers 18 months earlier (on April 11, 1976), I would probably have run away from home to see what those guys were up to — that real life Star Wars adventure they were beginning.

Mobile App Market Will Continue To Be Where It’$ @!

The total mobile app market anticipated to be worth $25 Bil by 2015!

Details:

A new report from MarketsandMarkets indicates that the total global mobile applications market is expected to be worth $25 billion by 2015, up from about $6.8 billion in 2010, with a compound annual growth rate of 29.6 percent from 2009 to 2014. Apple’s App Store is projected to hold nearly 20.5 percent of the global market by 2015. Though Asia is the largest market in terms of mobile app downloads with 36 percent, North America led the market since 2009 with a 41.6 percent revenue share. The European mobile applications market stood at $1.2 billion in 2009, but is expected to become the largest market by 2015 at $8.4 billion and growing at a CAGR of 33.6 percent from 2010 to 2015.

yes, i’ll have the awesomest app for iPad (or for 2010 for that matter) with some updatey awesomesauce please?

From its launch a number of folks screamed loudly that they wanted Flipboard to do the same thing with RSS feeds. Well this new update brings that functionality as well as new ways to share information that you discover. It ties into your Google Reader account and brings RSS feeds you follow there. Most of the functionality (sharing, starring for later reading, etc.. is there.)

In addition, support is now included for Flickr and other venues too. also it now loads full stories and pulls you through to the destination when you click for more.
The forecast: this could pose major threat for Seesmic, Tweetdeck, Google Reader and the like — with the exception that Flipboard 2.0 still lacks multiple twitter account support (why?!!?!)
The lesson here: Listening to your enthusiasts works! Let that be a lesson to all ye bossy app dev hauses not really doing what the people want. Flipboard could have (and still can for that matter) keep going in a variety of directions, but i think this shows a lot of wisdom and a lot of restraint.

It is now legal to jailbreak an iPhone. Yes, it voids warranty, but at least it’s allowed! i cant even describe how happy this makes me!!! Yesterday lots of tweets were shooting around after I posted the Wired story of the legal news & everyone was all proud of the USA. It was so sweet to see pride and even patriotism from so many geeks who rarely feel heard/ understood by govt. This will open up so much for developers — and it deregulates a lot of app dev that Apple was otherwise holding tight reins on for their own profitability. Understandably. But now that cannot happen anymore. That said, I agree with Tarah:
if you’re going to jailbreak your iPhone, you have to respect the hardware that you’ve been given, but it’s up to you to figure out how to create a positive user experience on your own (or with the developer community), because, in my opinion, it comes with a pretty superb user experience upon purchase. Ethically, though, I agree with this decision - if you buy a machine, you should be able to do whatever you want with it, as long as it’s not endangering anyone.

How might this change things immediately for you? theoretically, any phone can now be sold and unlocked on any carrier (if supported)! That means when you travel you can hook up a world phone without contract (sometimes) & a host of other small awesomenesses that should have ALWAYS existed.
